On Water

Canoe

The canoe was narrower than other boats.
A sudden shift of weight could tip it sideways.

I learned to keep my balance.

The paddle dipped quietly into the water.

One stroke at a time, the lake unfolded around me.

Sometimes I crossed the lake alone.
Sometimes a friend paddled beside me.

The water felt wider from a canoe.

So did the possibilities.
