III
Shifting Identity
At some point,
it stops feeling like
something you do.
And starts feeling
like who you are.
You don’t think about it.
You don’t question it.
You just move that way.
Toward what’s needed.
Toward what’s missing.
Toward what keeps things working.
It feels natural.
Which is why
you trust it.
And because you trust it,
you rarely stop to ask
what else is there.
Not what others need—
but what you feel.
Not what keeps things steady—
but what you actually want.
So your sense of self begins to form
around what you give.
How available you are.
How understanding you are.
How much you can hold.
And it works.
You are valued.
You are relied on.
You are seen—
for that.
But only for that.
And over time,
something begins to shift.
Who am I
when I’m not giving like this?
Not answered.
Just no longer asked.
This is where it settles.
Not as effort.
Not as choice.
But as identity.
And that’s what makes it hard to change.
Because it doesn’t feel like
you’re leaving a pattern.
It feels like
you’re leaving yourself.
