Strawberries

The Fox and the Strawberry

A fox found a young strawberry beside the path, still small and green. She had a lot of ripening to do.

The strawberry froze as the fox leaned closer and sniffed.

She held very still.

The fox sniffed again.

Finally, she couldn't stand it any longer.

“Well?”

“Well what?” asked the fox.

“Aren't you going to eat me?”

The fox looked surprised.

“No, I don’t like strawberries.”

The strawberry stared at him.

The fox stretched out beside the path and rested his head on his paws.

“I like this spot.”

So the strawberry relaxed, and the two of them sat together in the afternoon sun.

All that time, she had been preparing to be eaten.

The fox had only been looking for a place to nap.
